Charmaine Mendelsohn

Charmaine Mendelsohn hails from Port Elizabeth, South Africa where she grew up and attended school. Now 29 years old, she currently resides in Dublin, Ireland with her husband, Allan, and 8-year-old son, Nathan. She works full time and writes poetry and short stories in her spare time. She is currently working on a poetry anthology.

SAND

Scorched earth:
weathered by dry bitter winds.
Sun beating down relentlessly.
Days on end with no cloud in sight.
Tufts of brittle grass disintegrate,
and turn to dust in leathery hands.
Eyes turned up to the heavens;
begging for a drop of rain
to no avail.
God forsaken land.
The last breath escapes
the throat of a dying animal.
Whirlwind blasts the dry riverbed
like a demon that finds no rest.
Sand thrashes against rock,
and uproariously beats an unspoken prayer.
In the distance clouds gather;
thunder breaks the silence.
