Eight Place Settings

Snowflakes drift gently down, ugliness-
madness, spiked eggnog, the worst,
screams, blood, human destruction.

Expensive wrapped presents
no chances being opened
Why all the pretense?

Fake Christmas tree, completely screwed family
crunching, you step around
once upright tree, splintered colored glass under feet.

Eight place settings in the line of fire
parents, vicious older brother, sister sit across
three younger brothers begging for a fable.

Dinner cooked careless, smoked filled kitchen
burned yam, scorched corn, turkey lying on the floor
another holiday dinner never making it, personal war.

Pound on the door, not any shock-
handcuffed, half the family led out, officer leans-
whispers, one day you'll know no fears.
