Maxine Staley

Maxine Staley is a great-grandmother who now has time for her many interests, painting, music, genealogy, and writing. WVU is helping her learn more about writing and she is meeting wonderful people with similar interests who willingly share their knowledge and talents.

Childhood Memory "S-o-o-k, Boss!", grandma calls. Cows "moo" from a distance, appear single file at the barn. Heads in grain filled stanchions Milk stool on sod floor Metallic zing as milk hits pail. Buckets of warm milk raised high slowly poured into large metal bowl. Cream can and bucket under spouts. Hard to turn crank, eases with effort. As if by magic, different liquids emerge from the spouts. Rich golden cream fills the can. Soft, cloud-like foam, sweet and frothy, atop the milk I fill my cup with foam Savor the texture and taste-- Childhood Ambrosia! copyright © 2000 by Maxine Staley
