THE OLD HOUSE

I stand alone, old and battered
In a garden full of weeds.
My walls peeling,
Brick showing,
Broken tiles on my roof
Let the rains come through.
Once-vibrant rooms
Now lie cold and empty
Save for the dust
And mice.

In this garden,
Children once frolicked,
Their laughter pealed like bells,
Footsteps echoed down corridors
Filled me with warmth and life.

Absorbed in these walls --
Thoughts, feelings,
Love and warmth,
Harsh words spoken
The sharing of grief -
It's over...
No more voices,
No footsteps pound through corridors;
Only the shadows,
And ghosts,
Remain.

Shrouded in dust,
Festooned with cobwebs,
I wait,
For the axe that will fall on these trees,
For the hammers that will smash me
Into dust and rubble.

Everything changes,
Men, society, even houses.
We all have our births
And deaths,
We all live and die.
